HVO Fuel FAQ: Learn more about the FAME-Free Renewable Fuel

Q: What is HVO fuel?

A:  HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), is a fossil-free, paraffinic fuel made from 100% renewable raw materials.

A more sustainable, high quality of diesel fuel, that is suitable for all diesel-powered vehicles and industrial powered generators.

Q: What are paraffinic fuels?

A: Paraffinic fuels are clean, high quality diesel fuels made from a wide variety of feedstocks, and include GTL (Gas to liquid), as well as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). Paraffinic fuels are fungible and can be used at any blending rates up to 100% in current and future diesel engines.

Q: Is HVO better than standard white diesel?

A: HVO fuel is significantly better for the environment compared to mineral diesel and is therefore key in helping the UK achieve its net-zero carbon target

Q: How is HVO made?

A: Produced from waste fats and vegetable oils, the fats are transformed into biofuel by hydrogenation.

Q: What is FAME diesel?

A: Diesel is a type of fuel most commonly used to power on-road vehicles and other forms of transport such as cars, lorries, trains, and boats. Diesel is refined from crude oil at petroleum refineries. In the US, these refineries produce 12 gallons of diesel from each 42 gallon barrel of crude oil.

Q: What is the difference between standard diesel and HVO?

A: HVO is able to mimic all of the essential properties of biodiesel whilst being 100% renewable and reducing greenhouse emissions by as much as 90%.

Q: What is the cetane number of diesel?

A: FAME biodiesel has a cetane number between 50 and 65 – whereas HVO has a cetane number between 70 and 90 which provides better starting performance, clean combustion, and less chance of waxing in extremely cold weather.

Q: What can HVO be used for?

A: HVO is suitable for use in all diesel-powered vehicles and industrial powered generators.

Q: Can HVO be used as an alternative to kerosene?

A: Studies are currently being conducted to assess the success of HVO being used in kerosene powered boilers. At the moment they are looking successful and the idea of HVO being used in oil tanks is promising. More information will be released once studies have concluded.

Q: Can my vehicle run on pure HVO?

A: Yes, absolutely! The similarities between diesel and HVO mean that it can be used as a drop-in alternative in most cases. But we always advise to check with your engine manufacturer first.

Q: What manufacturer approvals does HVO have?

A:

Passenger car manufacturers approving the use of HVO fuel

  • Citroën

  • DS Automobiles

  • Ford (for it’s Transit van)

  • Mercedes-Benz

  • Peugeot

  • Renault

  • Volvo

Heavy-duty road vehicle manufacturers approving the use of HVO fuel

  • Mercedes-Benz

  • DAF

  • Iveco

  • MAN

  • Renault

  • Scania

  • Volvo Trucks

Non-road vehicle manufacturers approving the use of HVO fuel

  • AGCO

  • Caterpillar

  • John Deere

  • Scania

  • Steyr

Diesel engine manufacturers approving the use of HVO fuel

  • Daimler

  • Deutz

  • FPT

  • ISUZU

  • MTU

  • Perkins

  • Scania

  • Volvo Penta

Q: Can HVO be mixed with diesel?

A: HVO is a drop-in fuel meaning that it can be mixed with standard diesel. However, in order to see the full benefits HVO offers, we would recommend a full tank clean prior to the swich from diesel to HVO.

Q: What additional infrastructure is needed to be able to use HVO?

A:  HVO is a 'drop in' fuel which can be used directly in conventional diesel tanks without the need for modifications, new infrastructure or any vehicle investment

Q: How long can HVO be stored for?

A: Ensuring good tank maintenance and storage conditions allows HVO to be stored for up to 10 years. This is much longer than that of conventional diesel which can be stored to up to 1 year.

Q: Is HVO toxic?

A: HVO fuel is completely biodegradable, non-toxic and odourless as it’s made from 100% renewable waste materials. As a tried and tested clear and bright diesel fuel, it’s perfectly clean and safe to use.

Q: How long is the delivery window for HVO?

A: HVO is just as accessible to Ukay energy as conventional diesel so you do not need to allow for any prolonged delivery times and can place orders as normal.

Q: How can I buy HVO?

A: Don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01376 574 650 and we will be happy to place an order for you.

Q: Does HVO contain palm oil?

A: At Ukay energy, we do not support the use or sale of palm oil derived HVO and will only supply ISCC verified waste derived product into the market. The Proof of Sustainability (POS) confirms the origin of raw material and ensures that users can verify the credentials of Crown HVO. Our renewable diesel product does not contain any products that contribute to global deforestation and is therefore accepted by the RFTO. It also qualifies for further RFTO credits as it’s derived from 100% waste products.
