Lets keep you up to date on red diesel and rebated fuel eligibility

Following the 2020 Budget, legislation to restrict the entitlement to use red diesel and rebated biofuels was announced. Since April 1st 2022, a large majority of businesses are no longer able to use rebated red diesel and have instead needed to switch to appropriate, ideally more environmentally sustainable fuel alternatives.

Who is affected by the changes to red diesel eligibility?

  • Plant hire, logistics or waste management

  • Road maintenance

  • Construction, mining and quarrying

  • For manufacturing (e.g. ceramics, steel, timber)

  • Airport operations

  • Oil and gas extraction

  • At ports

  • Refrigeration units on lorries

WHO IS AFFECTED?

Construction, Manufacturing, Distribution (including refrigeration), Waste management, Commercial heating, Leisure, Mining and quarrying

WHAT HAS CHANGED?

Since April 2022, many red diesel users are no longer entitled to a rebate of 42.77ppl on the fuel duty and instead have had to swap to other alternatives such as white diesel, with a duty rate of 52.95ppl.

WITH REGULATIONS

Ensure no rebated fuels are purchased or used in non-exempt businesses from April 1st 2022. Retain all purchasing documentation to ensure you have a paper trail for HMRC

Legislation restricting the use of rebated fuels came into effect on April 1st 2022.

How to stay in line with regulations

In order to remain compliant with government regulations, businesses who are no longer eligible to use rebated fuels must ensure no rebated fuels are purchased or used from April 1st 2022. We also recommend retaining all purchasing documentation to ensure you have a paper trail for HMRC
